LAWRENCE FRYER, Ed.D.
Lawrence W. Fryer, Jr. is currently engaged as an Independent Consultant with Sapience Leadership LLC, a newly formed company out of the University of Pennsylvania’s Penn Center for Innovation and is in the PCI Ventures UPSTART Portfolio.
His most recent position was serving as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Austin Independent School District (AISD), 2010 to 2015. AISD has 86,000 students and 129 schools. From 2007 to 2010, he served as the COO of Prince George’s County Public Schools, the 17th largest school district in the United States, 132,000 students and over 220 schools. His accomplishments while serving with AISD include national recognition by the Council of Great City Schools, membership comprised of the 68 largest school districts in the United States, with the 2012 Distinguished Service Award for dedication to education and personal commitment to leadership, innovation and professionalism, which serve as standards by which to judge the work of others.
Fryer earned a Doctorate Degree (Ed.D.) at the University of Pennsylvania in Educational and Organizational Leadership through the Mid Career Doctoral Program in Education Leadership, a Graduate Certificate in Business Leadership from Johns Hopkins University, and is a Broad Superintendents Academy fellow. He has a Masters of Science Degree in National Security Strategy and Policy from National Defense University and Bachelor of Science Degree from Prairie View A&M University.
Fryer served on active duty as an officer in the United States Marine Corps for over 20 years and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. His success led to promotions and assignments to positions of increasing responsibility over the course of his military career, including selection for operational forces command billets and staff positions culminating in his assignment as a Plans Officer on the Joint Staff, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon.
While on active duty in the United States Marine Corps, he completed the graduate level Naval War College and the Defense Systems Management College’s Advanced Management Program. His work experience as he transitioned from the military into the educational sector involved private sector leadership responsibilities where he was last employed with IBM Global Business Services as a Senior Managing Consultant.
